If you’re like most homeowners, you want to make sure your home stays safe from all sorts of pests. That includes Termites! Did you know that Termites cause billions in dollars each year in damage! To think, this small insect can cause so much damage is horrendous to think upon. However, that is why we are here! To keep the termites away and make sure your home stays strong and sturdy!

How Do You Know If You Have Subterranean Termites?

Subterranean Termites, like the name suggest, travel using the soil as a vehicle. They live underground. Eating and destroying mainly dead and or decomposing wood. Subterranean Termites will eat dying or dead trees, wood piles, and or other wood that may be in contact with the soil. However, this appetite is what makes your home a snack for Termites. Termites have a strong perception of smell. Meaning they can find and locate wood using their senses. Termites will travel through concrete and or other substances to find and locate wood.

  • What To Look For!
    • Mud Tubes On Exterior Of Home: Subterranean Termites will use Mud Tubes to connect from the soil up into your home. These are usually found on the slab wall of the home’s foundation. This is why we stress keeping the slab wall visible and not covered by high mulch and or soil. Any time the slab wall is unexposed, it serves as an invitation for Subterranean Termites to channel up and down your home looking for a food source.
    • Damaged Wood: Exterior wood can be damaged for a variety of reasons. Wood rot to Carpenter Bee damage can all effect exterior wood. Wood rot can also be difficult to distinguish from Termite damage. That is why it is important you have a professional team like CPL Pest Control visit at least once a year to make sure your home does not have Termites. However, Termite damage is usually found in baseboard trim and window seals. This is a good place for you to monitor termite damage!
    • Mud/Soil on Interior Walls: Subterranean Termites work their way up and down a piece of wood. However, once they have reached the highest point of the piece of wood they are working on, they tend to make exit holes. These exit holes are about the size of pin tip and are usually covered in soil. Soil is important because without it, the Subterranean Termite dehydrates and dies. These exit holes are then used by reproducers to exit out of the termite gallery and into other areas maintaining wood. Reproducers have one job… and that is to create a sub-colony in a different portion of the home. Darker walls make finding and locating soil/mud on walls more difficult.
