Do I Have Drywood Termites?
To answer this question, would require a thorough inspection from the CPL Pest Control team. However, there are some very familiar signs you can look for that will indicate to you whether your home or dwelling has Drywood Termites. Probably the most visible indication you have Drywood Termites is the observation of “Frass”. Frass is a collection of Termite Fecal pellets and Saw dust. This collection is usually found in a pyramid like manner or in a disorganized fashion, depending on where the “kick out hole” is. The kick out hole is the exit portion of the Drywood Termite gallery that Drywood Termites use to relieve the Drywood Termite gallery of Frass. If the Kick out hole is located above the pile, then the pile usually tends to favor a pyramid shape. If the Kick out hole is located below the pile of Frass “on the floor”, the pile of Frass tends to be less pyramid looking and more of a simple pile. These are all of the signs our inspectors take into consideration when examining your home for Drywood Termites. We want to make sure that we are examining your home with the absolute amount of thoroughness!
Another sign you have Drywood Termites is the observation of damaged wood. Drywood Termites often take a long time to do a significant amount of damage. However, they do perform enough damage to let you know they are present. Usually, their galleries are accompanied with a destruction of the first (softer) layer of wood. Again, a very cosmetic problem that can turn structural if left untreated for a significant amount of time.
What Makes DryWood Termites Unusual?
Drywood Termites are not like other species of Termites in their origination . Subterranean and Formosan Termites originate in the soil, and Subterranean Termites must continue to return to the soil to keep a sense of hydration. Drywood Termites live inside the wood they have colonized and do not exit for survival. Meaning, all they need is located inside that piece of wood (food and water). Hence, the name “Drywood Termite”. This can pose a problem because most homeowners can go long periods of time without realizing they have a problem with Termites. This is where we come in! We use top of the line state of the art technology to detect whether your home has a problem with Drywood Termites.
Why Does My Home Have A Problem With Drywood Termites?
Two reasons, your location and random probability! The Houston Heights and surrounding areas are NOTORIOUS for Drywood Termite population. With the bungalow revival that has taken place, most of our beautiful victorian style homes in the Heights are layered with older wood. Older wood that has never been treated for Drywood Termites.
To make matters worse, every year, we have what is called the “Termite Swarm”. This takes place from mid April to around Mid June. In this swarm, Termites will spread their wings (literally) take flight, and settle in surrounding areas. Now the key feature here is, Termites have TERRIBLE eyesight, but a GREAT perception of light. So what will happen is, Termites will swarm towards light. This is the reason why we see many Drywood Termite colonies near and around Windows, Door Frames, Attic Vents, etc. Now what will take Drywood Termites to your home is sheer probability, with a little help from the wind and light, Drywood Termites can become a real problem for you and. your home.
