Wasps In My Chimney! – Why Does Spring, Texas Have A Wasp Problem?

Wasps are a common sight in Houston during the winter months. They thrive in the colder weather and can often be found near homes and buildings, looking for a place to nest. Wasps can be a nuisance and can pose a danger to people and pets. In this article, we will discuss why wasps like your home and what you can do to prevent Wasps from nesting in your home.

What is a Wasp?

Wasps are insects that belong to the Hymenoptera family. Wasps vary in size and color, but all have narrow waists and four membranous wings. Wasps frequently build nests out of their saliva rather than beeswax. Wasps can be beneficial as they help control other insect populations such as caterpillars and flies. Wasps also pollinate flowers on which they feed on nectar and pollen, though some species of wasp are parasitic. Wasps can be nuisances around the holidays when they build nests inside homes or on chimneys. Wasps become active in autumn as temperatures drop, providing there’s enough food available to last through winter hibernation

Why Do Wasps Like Chimneys?

Wasps love chimneys because they provide a perfect space for a wasp nest. Wasps can crawl into the narrow space between the bricks and build a large, thriving nest that is protected from most predators and weather elements. Wasps can also cause a lot of damage to a chimney, as they can easily chew through mortar and other materials.

Why Do Wasps Like My Home?

Wasps are attracted to homes because they provide a safe place for wasps to nest and raise their young. Wasps are also attracted to the warmth that homes provide in the winter months. In addition, wasps are attracted to places where there’s food. Wasps love the sweet nectar produced by flowers, so they’re often found in backyards with large flower beds or vegetable gardens. Wasps may also be attracted to spilled fruit juices and rotting fruit that has fallen from trees.

What should I Do If I’ve Been Stung By A Wasp?

If you’ve been stung by a wasp, your first concern should be to make sure it doesn’t sting anyone else. Wasps can sting multiple times and still be able to defend themselves using their stinger which contains venom, therefore it is likely that the wasp will attempt to attack again if provoked or if another person comes too close.

If you are not allergic to wasp venom, then the best course of action is to clean and ice the area around the sting as soon as possible. This will help to reduce swelling and inflammation. If you are allergic to wasps, then you will need to seek medical attention as soon as possible, as anaphylactic shock is a possible side effect of an allergic reaction to a wasp sting.

Whilst Wasps are harmful, many Wasps such as Paper Wasps and European Wasps will not be aggressive unless they feel their nests or food sources are threatened. However, if you have been stung by a wasp, it is likely that the Wasps will be more aggressive towards you in the future. Wasps are also likely to sting humans that are stung by them, therefore it is advised not to approach Wasps if possible.

If Wasps do become aggressive around your home or work place, they can cause major problems for people living nearby.

What Can You Do To Prevent Wasps?

The best way to prevent Wasps is to keep food sources out of reach. Board up any gaps on the exterior of your home that wasps could crawl through, seal cracks around doors and windows, clean up spilled fruit or sweet juices immediately after they are spilled, and store all garbage in metal containers with lids.
